Controller (For temp workers)
Role purpose:
BTL Accounting is seeking a contractor to support the controlled implementation of a new initiative within a tight timeline and within set constraints. The role will assess the information currently available, identify where new processes are required or existing processes need to be adapted, and then design and implement efficient, effective manual processes to support an interim go-live state.
The successful contractor will help the team establish a practical operating model that is controlled, proportionate and sustainable, without introducing significant additional workload or avoidable financial reporting risk. The work will include intercompany and segment reporting considerations, reconciliation requirements where appropriate, and the production of documentation maintained to an audit-ready standard. Working with colleagues outside of Accounting will also be required.
Key responsibilities:
Review the available information, requirements and existing process landscape for the initiative.
Identify process gaps, control gaps, dependencies and areas where existing accounting processes need to be adjusted.
Assess the implications for intercompany accounting, segment reporting, period-end activities and management information.
Determine where reconciliations are required and define appropriate ownership, frequency, evidence and escalation routes.
Design pragmatic manual processes for the interim go-live state, with a focus on efficiency, control effectiveness and ease of operation.
Define process steps, inputs, outputs, roles and responsibilities, review points, approval requirements and exception handling.
Implement and embed the agreed interim processes with the relevant BTL Accounting stakeholders.
Prepare clear process narratives, work instructions, control descriptions, reconciliation instructions, templates and supporting working papers.
Ensure documentation is complete, version-controlled, traceable and maintained to an audit-ready standard.
Identify risks associated with the interim state and propose proportionate mitigations.
Support readiness activities ahead of go-live and help resolve issues arising during implementation.
Provide regular progress updates and maintain effective communication with the Accounting Controller group and senior managers.
Participate in regular check-ins, clearly escalating decisions, blockers, dependencies and risks.
Capture lessons learned and recommend improvements that may be relevant to the future-state process design.
Expected deliverables:
Current-state assessment and process gap analysis.
Documented requirements and design principles for the interim processes.
Process and control risk considerations documented.
Defined reconciliation approach, including accountabilities, timing, evidence and issue resolution.
Implemented manual process documentation and working templates.
Go-live readiness assessment, including open actions, dependencies and residual risks.
Regular status reporting for senior stakeholders.
Handover pack enabling the BTL Accounting team to operate and maintain the interim processes after the engagement ends.
Experience and capabilities:
Essential:
Strong accounting and finance process design experience, ideally in a semi-complex, multi-entity environment.
Experience assessing incomplete or evolving requirements and converting them into practical operating processes.
Demonstrable understanding of intercompany accounting and reporting considerations.
Experience with segment reporting, management reporting or similar business-unit reporting requirements.
Experience designing or improving reconciliation processes and related controls.
Strong documentation skills, with the ability to produce clear, structured and audit-ready process materials.
Practical understanding of financial controls, evidence standards and risk-based process design.
Ability to work independently, manage ambiguity and make progress across multiple stakeholders.
Strong communication skills, including the ability to provide concise updates to senior managers.
Desirable:
Experience supporting a finance transformation, system implementation, business integration or new operating model.
Experience working with interim or manual processes ahead of automation or system stabilisation.
Experience in a multinational, shared-services or group accounting environment.
Familiarity with SAP, BlackLine or comparable finance systems and reconciliation tools.
Experience working across team and/or stakeholders in multiple locations.
Ways of working and stakeholder expectations:
The contractor will receive guidance and direction from the Accounting Controller group while taking day-to-day ownership of the agreed workstream. They will be expected to:
Establish a clear workplan and maintain an organised action, decision and risk log.
Work collaboratively with accounting, reporting, control and operational stakeholders.
Keep senior managers informed through regular updates and structured check-ins.
Raise issues early where requirements, ownership, data quality or timing could affect readiness.
Balance speed of implementation with appropriate control, documentation and auditability.
Design processes that are workable in practice and do not create disproportionate recurring workload.
Definition of success:
By the end of the engagement, the team should have:
A clear understanding of the process and control changes required for the initiative.
A controlled interim operating model ready to support go-live.
Documented and owned manual processes covering relevant accounting, reporting and reconciliation activities.
Sufficient evidence and documentation to support review and audit requirements.
Clear visibility of residual risks, limitations and future-state improvement opportunities.
A complete handover to the BTL Accounting team.
